About Word Unscrambler
Word Unscrambler is a free online tool that finds every real English word you can make from a given set of letters. Type your letters into the search box on the homepage and you'll instantly see a list of valid words grouped by length. Whether you are playing Scrabble, solving a Wordle puzzle, working through a crossword clue, or just curious about what words hide inside a jumble of letters, Word Unscrambler gives you the answer in real time — no page reloads, no waiting, no sign-up required.
What we offer
- 370,000-word dictionary. Every match is checked against the same public-domain English word list used by most anagram solvers. If it is a real English word, we will find it.
- Real-time matching. Results appear as you type. There is no "submit and wait" step — the dictionary is held in memory so every search is instant. This is what sets Word Unscrambler apart from older tools that require you to press a button and wait for a page load.
- Definitions for every word. Click any result to see its part of speech, pronunciation, dictionary definition, usage examples, and synonyms. Every word links to its own dedicated page with full details.
-
Subset matching.
Every word found uses only the letters you supplied and only as many
times as each appears. A query for
listenreturnslisten, silent, enlist, tinsel, and every smaller word that can be made from those letters — not just exact anagrams. - Anagram links. Every result links to a page showing its full definition and every word you can make from those letters — a great way to explore the dictionary and discover new words.
- Mobile-friendly design. The tool works on phones, tablets, and desktop browsers with equal speed and ease. No app download needed — just open the site and start typing.
How Word Unscrambler works
When you type letters into the search box, the tool sorts those letters alphabetically and matches them against a pre-built index of the entire dictionary. Because the dictionary lives in server memory (not on disk), the lookup takes microseconds — you see results appear character by character as you type, which is why we call it a real time word unscrambler.
The matching algorithm uses subset matching: it finds every word in
the dictionary whose letters are a subset of your input letters,
respecting the count of each letter. So if you enter listen
(one L, one I, one S, one T, one E, one N), the tool finds every word
that can be spelled using only those six letters — from the full
six-letter anagrams down to two-letter words like is and
it.
Who is Word Unscrambler for?
The tool is designed for anyone who works with words:
- Scrabble players who want to find the highest-scoring word from their rack. Use the length grouping to quickly spot 7-letter bingos, then click through to check definitions and Scrabble validity.
- Wordle solvers who have a few letters and need to narrow down the possibilities. Type your known letters and see every valid five-letter word that contains them.
- Crossword enthusiasts who need to fill in a blank based on a few known letters. The subset matching finds words that fit the available letters.
- Students and language learners building vocabulary. Browsing the results for a set of letters reveals words you may not have known, and each one links to a full definition.
- Anagram hobbyists who enjoy the puzzle of rearranging letters. The instant feedback makes it easy to experiment and learn.
Our dictionary
The core word list is based on the dwyl/english-words repository, a curated public-domain collection of over 370,000 English words. This includes standard Scrabble words, common colloquialisms, and technical vocabulary — making it one of the most comprehensive free dictionaries available online.
Definitions are sourced from dictionaryapi.dev, which aggregates data from public-domain dictionaries. When you click a word on the results page, the definition is fetched and displayed alongside the word's part of speech, phonetic transcription, and example sentences.
