What Is an Anagram Solver?
An anagram is a word or phrase formed by rearranging the letters of another. For example, LISTEN is an anagram of SILENT, and EAT is an anagram of ATE and TEA. An anagram solver takes a set of letters and finds every possible anagram — not just the full-length rearrangements, but every shorter word you can form from those same letters.
This is called subset matching: if you enter the letters LISTEN, the solver finds the full anagram SILENT, plus shorter words like LIST, LINE, TIE, NET, and dozens more. No letter is used more times than it appears in your input.
How to Solve Anagrams
- Enter your letters. Type the scrambled letters into the search box above. You can enter 2 to 15 letters at a time.
- Review the results. Words are grouped by length, starting with the shortest. Full anagrams (same length as your input) appear in the longest group.
- Click any word for its definition. Not sure what a word means? Click it to see the dictionary definition, part of speech, synonyms, and pronunciation.
- Use filters to narrow results. If you know the word starts or ends with a specific letter, use the "Starts with" or "Ends with" filters to narrow down the list.
Techniques for Finding Anagrams Manually
While a solver is the fastest way to find anagrams, practicing manual techniques sharpens your pattern recognition:
- Look for common prefixes and suffixes. Many English words share prefixes like RE-, UN-, or IN- and suffixes like -ING, -ED, -TION, or -LY. Strip them away to find the root word hiding inside.
- Anchor the vowels. English words need at least one vowel (A, E, I, O, U, and sometimes Y). Start by placing your vowels, then arrange consonants around them.
- Try common letter pairs. Pairs like TH, SH, CH, PH, and WH appear in many English words. If your letters include T and H, try placing them together.
- Work from the longest word down. If you can find the longest word (the full anagram), the shorter words are often easier to spot once you know what letters remain.
- Write the letters in a circle. Rearranging letters physically — on paper or in your mind — helps break the pattern of reading them in the original order.
