What Is a Word Finder?
A word finder is a tool that searches a dictionary for words matching your criteria. While an anagram solver rearranges all your letters into words, a word finder goes further: it finds words that contain your letters, words that start with or end with specific letters, and words of any length — even if you don't use all your input letters.
This makes the word finder ideal for crossword clues (where you know some letters and their positions), Scrabble (where you need to play tiles from your rack), and any situation where you have partial information about a word.
How to Use This Word Finder
- Enter your letters. Type any combination of 2 to 15 letters into the search box. The finder will show every word that can be formed from those letters.
-
Apply filters. Use the three filter boxes to narrow your
results:
- Starts with — only show words beginning with those letters. Perfect for crossword clues where you know the first few letters.
- Contains — only show words that include those letters anywhere. Ideal when you know a letter belongs in the word but don't know where.
- Ends with — only show words ending with those letters. Useful for finding words with common suffixes like -ING, -TION, or -ABLE.
- Browse results by length. Words are grouped by letter count, from shortest to longest. For Wordle, jump to the 5-letter group. For Scrabble bingos, look at the 7-letter group.
- Click any word for its definition. Every result links to a full dictionary page with meaning, pronunciation, and synonyms.
Word Finder for Crosswords
Crossword puzzles often give you a few known letters and ask you to fill in the rest. The word finder handles this perfectly:
- Enter all the letters you know in the main search box, plus any extra letters that might be in the word.
- Use the "Starts with" filter for letters at the beginning of the answer.
- Use the "Ends with" filter for letters at the end of the answer.
- Use the "Contains" filter for letters you know are in the word but whose position you don't know.
For example, if a crossword clue is "five-letter word starting with S and ending with T containing E," you would enter S, E, T in the main box, set "Starts with" to S, "Ends with" to T, and look at the 5-letter results.
Word Finder for Scrabble
In Scrabble, you have seven tiles on your rack and need to find the highest-scoring word. The word finder makes this easy:
- Enter all seven rack letters to see every valid word you can play.
- If there is a letter on the board you want to connect to, add it to your input and use the "Starts with" or "Ends with" filter.
- Focus on the longest words first — 7-letter words earn a 50-point bingo bonus. See our Scrabble Bingo Words guide for strategies.
- Check our Scrabble Dictionary page to verify word validity in different rule sets.
Word Finder for Wordle
If you play Wordle, the word finder is your best companion after the first guess. Enter your known green and yellow letters, then use the filters to place them correctly:
- Green letter in position 1? Use "Starts with" with that letter.
- Green letter at the end? Use "Ends with" with that letter.
- Yellow letters that must be in the word somewhere? Use "Contains" with each yellow letter.
- Then check the 5-letter results for possible Wordle answers. Our Wordle Solver page has more Wordle-specific tips.
