The single most effective starting word in English is CRANE. It covers three of the five most common vowels (A, E) and two of the most frequent consonants (R, N). Other top-tier starters include:

Wordle Strategy: Beyond the First Guess
After your starting word
Your second guess should focus on letters your first word didn't test. If you started with CRANE (testing C, R, A, N, E) and got no hits, try a word rich in the remaining common letters: SOUND covers S, O, U, D — all untested. Unscramble SOUND to see every word those letters can make.
When you have green and yellow letters
This is where a word unscrambler becomes a secret weapon. Type your known letters into the Word Unscrambler, use the "starts with," "contains," and "ends with" filters, and you'll see every valid possibility — no guesswork needed.
For example, if you know the word has S in position 1 and E in position 5, type your remaining letters in the main box and set "starts with S" and "ends with E". The results will only show words matching all your constraints.
Eliminate, don't confirm
Each guess should test as many new letters as possible. If you've confirmed that A and E are in the word, don't waste a guess on a word that uses both again — choose a word that tests three or four letters you haven't tried yet.
